Why the name Taytay?
In 1978, Taylor was the last name of my parents’ best friends, and they were foreward thinking folks and they named me Taylor even though 564 other boys names were more popular. That’s pretty cool, even though most people thought I was Tyler. Of course, thanks to the tendency of almost every parent to name their little girl “Taylor” in the mid-nineties, I now frequently hear my name at public places and turn around to discover that it’s being directed to a 12 year old girl.
In high school, what started as a joke name by my friends and Uncle eventually stuck, and I became known as “Taytay”. It’s not exactly masculine, but this has its advantages on Xbox Live where no one suspects that I am a threat. Remember those 12 year old girls I told you about? Well, they seem to like the nickname too, and thanks to the fact that I have a catchall email address at taytay.com, I am constantly reminded how many little girls named “Taytay” there are out there, since I get their registration notices to MySpace and various other doll, pony, and childrens’ sites when they chose poor fake email addresses like “me at taytay.com”. But I still think “Taytay” is cool.
